How to Make Hair Long and Strong
Healthy hair growth depends on your diet, scalp health, hair care routine, hormones, genetics, and overall well-being. Hair generally grows slowly—about 1 centimeter per month—though this rate can vary from person to person. While it is not possible to drastically accelerate hair growth overnight, you can create an environment that fosters stronger and healthier hair growth.
1. Eat a Balanced, Protein-Rich Diet
Hair is primarily composed of a protein called 'keratin,' so consuming adequate protein is essential. Include foods such as eggs, fish, milk, yogurt, beans, lentils, soy, nuts, and various seeds in your diet.
For instance, instead of having just tea and biscuits for breakfast, you could opt for an egg, whole-grain toast, and fruit. For lunch, a balanced meal consisting of lentils, vegetables, rice or roti, and yogurt would be a good choice.
It is also important to address deficiencies in iron, zinc, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and other nutrients. However, taking excessive amounts of supplements or nutritional pills without knowing whether the body actually requires them can be harmful.
2. Take care of your scalp
A healthy scalp creates an optimal environment for hair growth. Wash your hair regularly based on how oily or sweaty your scalp gets. Use a mild shampoo and focus on cleansing the scalp rather than vigorously rubbing the hair itself.
If you suffer from persistent dandruff, intense itching, redness, or flaking skin, treating the underlying scalp issue is more effective than simply applying oil to your hair.
3. Be gentle with your hair
Try to avoid tying your hair in tight ponytails or buns every day. When detangling, do not start from the roots; instead, begin at the ends and gradually work your way up.
Example: If your hair becomes tangled after washing, gently detangle it using your fingers or a wide-toothed comb, rather than repeatedly pulling at it with a fine-toothed comb.
4. Reduce the use of excessive heat
Frequent use of straighteners, curling irons, and very hot blow-dryers can damage the hair's structure and lead to breakage. If you must use heat, keep the temperature moderate and consider using a heat-protective product.
Remember: Minimizing hair breakage can make it seem like your hair is growing better, as it helps preserve the length of the hair you have grown.
5. Use hair conditioner
Conditioner helps reduce friction and makes hair easier to manage. Apply it primarily to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, especially if your hair tends to be dry.
For instance, if your hair feels rough after shampooing, leaving the conditioner on for a few minutes before rinsing can help soften the hair and reduce tangles.
6. Protect your hair from damage
Intense sunlight, chlorine, saltwater, and friction can cause dryness and damage. Wearing a hat when going outdoors can provide useful protection. Rinse your hair with clean water after swimming.
To avoid excessive tangling or hair breakage, you might also want to avoid sleeping with very wet hair.
7. Managing stress and getting adequate sleep
Chronic stress can increase hair loss in some individuals. Regular exercise, sufficient sleep, rest, and a balanced lifestyle improve overall health, which in turn supports healthy hair.
8. Be patient and monitor excessive hair loss
Hair growth takes time. Therefore, taking photographs every few months to track progress can be more effective than examining your hair daily.
If you notice sudden or excessive hair loss, bald patches, significant thinning, or persistent scalp issues, consult a dermatologist or a doctor. Hair loss can result from nutritional deficiencies, thyroid problems, hormonal changes, or the use of certain medications, all of which may require specialized treatment.
